Whether you’re an experienced cosplayer or you’ve never made one before in your life, everyone can enjoy wearing closet cosplays. These are costumes made from pre-existing clothes, optionally with a few additions or alterations to suit the character. And while the Winter 2022 anime season is filled with lots of fantasy and historical series that don’t lend themselves to this style of cosplay, there are still plenty of recognizable characters whose outfits are perfect for a beginner to take a stab at. So here are five closet cosplay ideas from Winter 2022 anime to try for your next convention!

1. Adult Eren Yeager from Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season Part 2 (Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14093766/mediaviewer/rm2881407233/" ]

Back in the earlier seasons when he was frequently decked out in his Survey Corps uniform and ODM gear, Eren Yeager was difficult to cosplay without buying/making expensive props and leather straps. However, now that he’s a free agent who only uses his titan form to fight, his outfits have become much more accessible for the average cosplayer. His signature green top can be bought or modified from a long-sleeve t-shirt, a voluminous black coat and a stiff breeze can help you stage his famous shirtless sunset pose, and you can experiment with makeup to get his eye bags and titan transformation lines just right. This version of Eren has all kinds of variations, so pick your favorite and dedicate your heart to mastering his intense energy.

2. Marin Kitagawa from Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru (My Dress-Up Darling)

Everyone’s new favorite waifu Marin Kitagawa is a natural fit for cosplay since she’s actually a cosplayer herself! Her simple school uniform can be assembled from formal separates, and then you can have fun accessorizing with chokers, bracelets, rings, and press-on nails to your heart’s content. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, try making her two-tone hair by learning how to dye wigs! There are plenty of techniques out there (fabric dye and acrylic paint are the most common) and hours’ worth of tutorials to get you started. Then, once you have the wig, you can wear any other cosplay you own and say that you’re dressed as Marin dressed as that character!

3. M4A1 from Dolls’ Frontline

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-517346" text="" url="" ]

M4A1 may look like an adorable anime girl, but she’s actually a highly competent and dangerous military android. To recreate her look from the anime, pair a brown leotard with gloves, headphones, an oversized sweatshirt tied around the waist, and tall gray boots with knee pads on top to simulate her leg armor. You can add the designs to her bandana, armband, and sweatshirt with fabric paint (look up how to make freezer paper stencils online!) and decorate an airsoft gun to complete the look. As we always say, though, make sure to check your con’s weapons policy to make sure you’re following the rules.

4. Shun Kamiya from Tribe Nine

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="twitter" url="https://twitter.com/tribenine_tokyo/status/1480487078345379841" ]

Futuristic baseball boy Shun Kamiya has a relatively simple design, but the bright pops of color and clever use of layering give it a distinctive flair that makes it recognizable even across a massive convention hallway. Use either fabric paint or Heat’n’Bond to add the details to his bomber jacket and shirt, and pair it with a beambat made from a baseball bat and glow-in-the-dark reflector tape. If you want to go for the full Danganronpa look, add bright blue color contacts and a wig styled with Got2B Glued hairspray so those spikes stay firmly airborne at all times.

5. Miranjo from Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13409432/mediaviewer/rm1981015553/" ]

Ranking of Kings’ mysterious antagonist (?) Miranjo seems a bit plain on paper, but the wow factor is in the accessories and the attitude. Use a curly black wig, green dress, green cloak, and brown belt for the base outfit, and then make her brooch from pretty much any crafting material you’re comfortable with. Craft foam, air-dry clay, resin, or even metal... as long as you can attach a big safety pin to the back of it, it should work! For an extra touch, find a hexagonal mirror with a wooden frame and decorate it to resemble her magic mirror. You could even use black spray-paint to fill in her hazy silhouette and pose dramatically on big staircases for extra grandiose flair.

Final Thoughts

You could also try out Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue the Animation or team up with a friend for a combined Ryang-ha Song and Chateau Dankworth cosplay from Love of Kill. But are there any other characters from Winter 2022 anime that you think would work well for closet cosplays? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!
