An Autistic Passion for Fashion

Emma Seely-Katzhumanrepeller.comI was diagnosed with Autism fairly late, at age 22. None of my loved ones were surprised. One thing that might have tipped them off is my longtime obsession with fashion and clothing, which I realized belatedly could fit into the paradigm of “special interest.” When I thought about it that way, it became apparent that being Autistic can give one a unique and valuable way of approaching fashion that I think deserves more exploration. For someone with heightened sensitivity, clothing and accessories can make or break an entire day out. Not only do things like texture and fit have the potential to trigger or soothe, clothes and accessories can be chosen for their visually or kinetically stimulating properties, their...

Straight men don’t like professional repercussions. Pop culture has been actively trying to rectify the imbalances. In the US and UK, two entertainment industries whose members are...

You all replied with some great questions, and gave us a lot of ideas on material we can pull together to help you!So for our first installment in what we hope is a long, continuing series, we have a great question from Fish Creek Country Gal:“I’m interested in any tips on the best equipment and tools (hand grinders, mixers, etc.) that don’t require electricity.”The hardest thing about answering this question is deciding which tools to recommend. I have a lot to say about off-grid living and what tools we depend on. I hope that these useful, well-loved devices can be...

Facebook Member of the Month: Donna Scherzberg

I have a very true and very funny story about December’s Facebook Group Member of the Month, Donna Scherzberg, that even she doesn’t know.  One day I received a Facebook message from my sister that included a picture of Donna that she swiped from the group.  The message read, “Who does Donna remind you of?”  I knew immediately.  I messaged my sister back, “Mommy!” While Donna and my mom certainly couldn’t pull off a successful Freaky Friday scheme, you have to admit, my sister wasn’t far off. Family resemblance aside, Donna is one of the original members of the Group and a vocal one who often looks to the group for advice while generously offering her own to many.  She...
